Q. How do I prepare for IELTS exam? 

A. As you know IELTS is an English language test. The more you have strong vocabulary, accurate grammar, writing and speaking practice; the more chances will be to score a desired band score. As IELTS comprises of four parts – writing, speaking, listening and reading; one needs to understand the different skills/techniques required for different parts. One should the management of time, understand the test format, marking criteria and for this practice is vital.

Q. What is the IELTS test format?

A. Listening test is for around 30 minutes with 4 sections and 40 questions. Reading test is double the time of listening; i.e. 60 minutes with 3 sections and 40 questions. Speaking is a short test of about 11-15 minutes, with 3 parts. This is generally about talking with the examiner to test your speaking abilities. Writing test is also 60 minutes test with task of a writing a letter; report and task 2 is about essay writing.

Q. How is the exam scored?

A. It is scored on the band scale of 0-9. Achieving the score varies from university to university or college or course. But it is generally 6 bands at least required for undergraduate programmes while for post graduate, 6.5 is the minimum requirement in each section.  

Q. How can I improve my all four skills?

A. Very obvious question. To begin with writing, one needs to paraphrase the question with the usage of synonyms, write an overview, describe the features in multiple paragraphs with supporting examples and then finally a conclusion (a silver lining). One should know the techniques a good and clear sentence, linking and connecting the paragraphs; should not go haywire.

For speaking, the simple mantra is – the more you practice, the more you will be perfect. Practice speaking English everyday.  Try to reply in details, not simply by saying yes or no. And of course, correct your mistakes. For listening, one needs to familiarise oneself with different accents so during the exam, you can listen correctly. Listening English news channels, radio is a good practice. Watching English movies is another fun way of practicing. Time is the most important key in reading. You have to read without wasting much time and understand it as well. Read the instructions carefully and don’t panic, this will help you to score good band score. And yes, during reading whenever you come across new words, mark them and learn their meanings. This will help you to enrich your vocabulary.
